Bose® invented noise cancelling headphones over 20 years ago.  The QuietComfort® 15 Acoustic Noise Cancelling Headphones and QuietComfort® 3 Acoustic Noise Cancelling Headphones are their current offerings.  The QuietComfort® 15 is the over-the-ear model with standard batteries and the QuietComfort® 3 is the on-the-ear model with rechargeable batteries.

Bose® has superior products as evidenced by these headphones.  They reduce even more noise than previous versions across the full spectrum of human hearing.  They use microphones both inside and outside each ear cup to sense and reduce more sounds.  For the QuietComfort® 15, the over-the-ear cushioned ear cups provide additional noise reduction.  Both deliver superior sound as you would expect from Bose®.

The proprietary Bose® signal processor and audio reproduction delivers quality sound including deep low tones.  The noise cancellation is excellent.  From airplane engines to noisy neighborhoods, Bose® has figured out how to shut out the world.  The light weight and generous cushioning around the ear cup reduce fatigue so these headphones can be worn for hours.  Since they do such a good job reducing outside noise and reproduce sounds with such clarity, it’s possible to enjoy at a “hearing-friendly” volume.

There are other, lower-priced alternatives, many which are suitable for most situations, but you’d be hard pressed to find alternatives in the same league as Bose®.

I recommend you review multiple sites to get a full, diverse perspective.  Generally speaking, there are the Bose® disciples, usually audiophiles, who don’t mind paying more to get superior sound and those that can’t imagine paying Bose® prices and are willing to live with something less robust.  The Bose® models run between $299 and $349 depending on the model.

Combined, raters on Amazon® give these models 5 stars around half the time and 4 stars about a quarter of the time.  This rater gives both models 5 stars.
